Britain’s most talented chef in Paris

Do you know anything about the British chef Rachel Khoo? I didn’t until a few weeks ago. She published a cookery book in March, followed by her own TV series, a BBC production in which she cooks food “the way Parisians cook and eat at home”.

She left a considerably good life in London, where she worked as PR in Fashion, with no more than 600 pounds to persue a carrer as a chef – as a British chef, in Paris. Does it seem difficult to you? It certainly was. Even though she took a patisserie course at the Le Cordon Bleu she was hardly seen as a proper chef by the French.

The recognition came after the opening of her Little Paris Kitchen, where she invited people online to dine at her flat. The “smallest restaurant in Paris”, as it was called, became a huge success and the Parisians seemed to find Rachel’s French dishes “with a little British twist”  incredibly delicious.

She is young – only 31 these days and 25 when left Croydon alone to cook in Paris  – charismatic, funny and very stylish. She loves the vintage look, which is applied not only to her wardrobe but also to her kitchen. The kitchenware is lovely, even though very few of them fit in her tiny flat. She has been considered by the British press as the new food revelation and nowadays, no matter where you go in Paris, from bakeries to gourmet bistros, the French have softened up to the flavour and personality of her dishes.
